Easiest way to survive a European heatwave in 2023

Climate change is finally showing its effects all around the world. And Europe seems to be the one hit hardest by it; and there can be multiple reasons for it but the one that makes sense is that Europeans are used to a colder and more stable environment as compared to rest of the world.

Europeans, unlike Asians, aren’t used to the fluctuations in temperature, especially to the warmer side, and thus are having a bad time adapting to this change.

The good news is that heatwaves don’t stick for long. But the bad news is that they are to stay and will keep coming back again and again.

But don’t worry. I have summed up all instructions given out by WHO (World Health Organization) and neatly packed them into a simple list.

  1. Stay hydrated by drinking cold drinks, especially when exercising ¹.
  2. Wear lightweight and breathable clothing ¹.
  3. Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day ¹.
  4. Keep your home cool.
  5. Check on vulnerable family members and neighbors.
  6. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
  7. Be prepared for power outages.
  8. Take cool showers or baths.
  9. Walk in the shade, apply sunscreen regularly, and wear a hat.
  10. Move to the coolest room in the home, especially at night.
  11. Avoid going outside during the hottest time of the day.
  12. Avoid strenuous physical activity if you can.
